Hearing Helps Give Older Americans Act an Upgrade

Last Thursday, the United States Senate Special Committee on Aging held a specific hearing in order to entertain suggestions for the reauthorization of the Older Americans Act (OAA).

Among the people who attended the hearing were researchers, members of senior-focused non-profit organizations, government officials, and representatives of senior care businesses. These interest groups presented their proposals for adjustments to the current version of the act.

A brief overview of the OAA

In 1965, Congress passed the OAA in an effort to bolster the government sponsored social services available to elders.

Among the goals of the OAA are to give elders (people aged 60 years and older) access to proper housing, a steady, passable income after they have retired, and optimal health care. It is also aimed at providing certain services that enable an elder to remain independent for as long as possible.

Some services already offered by the act are family caregiver assistance, transportation for elders, and home delivered meals.

In order to make sure that the ever-changing needs of elders and their caregivers are being addressed, the OAA is subject to review and revision every five years.

Current proposals

The current reauthorization process has brought to light some areas where the act could be more effective.

Enhancing support for caregivers, cracking down on Medicare and Medicaid fraud, and stronger cooperation between both government and non-government organizations that offer services to elders, were some of the more notable changes proposed in the Committee on Aging hearing.

What this means for caregivers

In 2000 a title specifically aimed at caregivers was added to the OAA.

A network of family caregiver support was built around this title. It gives people who are caregivers of elderly relatives access to special support and resources aimed at helping them provide better care.

The caregiver portion of the OAA is still considered to be in its infancy and there is a lot of room for improvement in terms of the assistance it offers.

Be sure to keep your eyes peeled for the upgrades in caregiver support options offered by the OAA that are likely to be brought about during this reauthorization cycle.
