Increase Muscle Mass to Reduce Diabetes Risk

Reducing your risk for Type II diabetes may come down to taking a break from the spin bike and picking up some free weights, according to researchers at the University of California, Los Angeles.

Their new study, published in the Journal of Endocrinology and Metabolism, indicates that resistance training may be helpful in staving-off insulin resistance and pre-diabetes, according to Webmd.com.

The American Diabetes Association says that people gradually begin to develop a level of insulin resistance as they get older. Insulin resistance interferes with the ability to regulateblood glucose levels, which can herald diabetes.

Complicating matters, aging adults often experience sarcopenia, or muscle loss, due to aging. This increases insulin resistance because it reduces the amount of muscle mass available to help them get rid of glucose.

Culling data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey of more than 13,600 adults, the researchers found that as a person’s muscle mass to total body weight ratio increased by 10%, their insulin resistance dropped by 11%. A comparable drop in pre-diabetes was also discovered.
