When it comes to treating the depressed elderly, sometimes an older category of medication is better than a newer one. At least that’s what scientists from the University of Nottingham concluded in a recent study regarding the safety of antidepressant medications in the elderly, according to Time magazine.

The researchers examined medical data from almost 61,000 adults between the ages of 65 and 100 to determine whether or not certain classes of antidepressant medication caused negative side-effects.

They found that the most advanced class of antidepressant medications, selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, or SSRIs, which include Prozac and Zoloft, appeared to have more negative effects than tricyclics, an older category of antidepressant medication. Compared with tricyclics, SSRIs upped fracture risk by 26%, seizure risk by 80% and stroke risk by 15%. Moreover, during the course of a year, 11% of those on SSRIs died, compared to 8% on trycyclics and 7% not taking an antidepressant.

Those taking other classes of antidepressants, such as Effexor and Remeron, had even higher negative outcomes, including higher risks for death and suicide.

Because of this, the researchers concluded that, in certain cases, tricyclics may be the better treatment option.

They also found that elderly people who took any kind of antidepressant were more likely than those not taking antidepressants to have adverse consequences, including seizures, strokes and fractures.
