Immune System Cell May Lead to New Alzheimer’s Treatment

Neuroscientists from Universitatsmedizin Berlin and Universitatsklinik Freiburg have made a discovery that they hope will eventually lead to a new treatment for Alzheimer’s Disease, Medicalnewstoday.com reported.

Their discovery involves a cell called a macrophage.

Macrophages are vital components of the immune system and play a role in many different functions, including muscle and wound repair and disease defense, according to Sciencedaily.com. Some are specialized.

Specialization occurs when a monocyte, a type of white blood cell, is exposed to certain proteins called cytokines. Cytokines encourage a monocyte to become a specific type of macrophage. Specialized macrophages can be found throughout the body in every type of tissue, from bone marrow to organs.

The researchers tested whether certain specialized macrophages could be used to shrink the harmful protein deposits that damage the brains of people with Alzheimer’s. By identifying a particular type of cytokine, they coaxed monocytes taken from bone marrow to become “scavenger” macrophages that attack these protein clumps in animal test subjects. Their results were published in the Journal of Neuroscience.

Though more testing is needed, the researchers hope this cell-based Alzheimer’s treatment eventually will help humans.
