CDC Counsels Baby Boomers to Get Tested for Hepatitis C

Baby boomers are now receiving advice that was once reserved for intravenous drug users and people receiving regular blood transfusions—get tested for hepatitis C.

The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) released a statement recommending that all boomers, regardless of whether or not they think they might have the disease, to undergo screening.

Health officials worry that many people remain unaware of their risk for infection.

Sharing needles and receiving a tainted blood transfusion are two commonly-known ways of contracting Hepatitis C. But razors, toothbrushes and tattoo equipment that have come in contact with an infected person’s blood can also transfer the disease.

According to CDC figures, two-thirds of people infected with hepatitis C are baby boomers, and many of them don’t even realize that they have the potentially deadly disease until it has severely damaged their liver.

CDC director, Thomas Frieden, M.D., M.P.H., told reporters via telephone that over 120,000 lives could be saved if more boomers undergo the one-time blood test used to diagnose the disease.

Once a person knows they have it, there are a number of things they can do to eradicate a hepatitis C infection and minimize its negative effects.

Treatments can successfully cure about 75 percent of people who have the disease. A sufferer can also reduce their risk for health complications (cirrhosis, liver cancer) by: getting vaccinated for hepatitis A and B, abstaining from alcohol, and not taking liver-damaging medications.
