Women in their 40s and 50s with asthma are hospitalized more than twice as often than men in the same age group, according to a 10-year study in the Annals of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology.

The findings indicate that hormonal changes during menopause may play a role. If you are a middle-aged woman with asthma, the American College of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology suggests that you ask your doctor if you should change medications or be on the lookout for any new symptoms that might be associated with a severe asthma attack during menopause.
