What Can You Do to Prevent Falls in Your Home?

Many accidents happen in the home every year, and a large percentage of them are preventable. One of the most frequent causes of injuries is from falling, which can be extremely dangerous as you get older. There are several things you can do around the house to prevent falls so that you and your loved ones are less likely to suffer an injury.

It is very important that you keep walkways clear of large furniture or clutter. If you try to dodge something too quickly, you may lose your balance. You may also trip over a hidden stack of magazines and hurt yourself. Keep all furniture along the walls, and avoid putting small pieces near paths. You should also check the flooring in walkways to make sure that there are no wrinkles that might cause someone to trip.

Flooring can be tricky because you need hard floors in some areas of the house despite their tendency to get slippery. Some people try to remedy this by adding rugs, but rugs can slip or wrinkle, which may cause someone to fall. Use carpet when possible, and keep it maintained. Make sure that it doesn’t come loose or begin to wrinkle. A carpet company can come in and stretch it if necessary.

You may want to use rugs in the kitchen and bathrooms, but make sure that you secure them to the floor using rug tape. This will keep them in place so that they don’t flip up or slide as you are walking on them.

As you get older, it may get more difficult to sit or stand without losing your balance. Lift chairs and recliners will rise up and lower so that you don’t have to risk your safety in order to sit down. There are also beds that will adjust so that you can get into and out of them safely.

Grab Bars

Many people suffer from falls in the bathroom, but this can be minimized with the use of grab bars. Grab bars are sturdy bars that are installed in the studs of the walls. They are much more reliable than towel bars, which are not safe to pull on. Install grab bars near the shower, bathtub and toilet so that you and your loved ones always have something to help stay stable.

You don’t have to be one of the many people who injure themselves by falling in their homes. These simple precautions will keep you and your loved ones safe.
